NARRATION: National Audubon Project Puffin naturalists are aboard each evening to narrate, help with bird identification and answer questions throughout the trip. With an expanding population and individual variation, the Puffins have been known to stay through Labor Day. We offer an authentic experience with a genuine love for the Maine Coast, our community and the people we serve. This usually occurs around the end of August. If you’d prefer to observe the puffins from afar, several reputable tour boat operators offer guided tours through the nesting islands on the Maine Coast. Here the public can view puffins and other. The Center celebrates the success of Project Puffin in bringing puffins and other rare Maine seabirds back to historic nesting islands. Our Puffin Watches will end when the birds have migrated. The Project Puffin Visitor Center opened its doors on Jwith the support from Audubon, local businesses, and private donors and has become a destination point for out of town visitors and residents. SEASON: We open in mid-May to accommodate our serious birdwatchers who have come to rely on us to get them out to the islands for the Spring migration. For more than a century Petit Manan light has ensured the safe travel for passing vessels. Bird watchers will enjoy a cruise to Petit Manan Island a national wildlife refuge and home to Petit Manan Lighthouse. Eastern Egg Rock in the midcoast region, Seal Island and Matinicus Rock at the mouth of Penobscot Bay, and Machias Seal Island and Petit Manan Island off the downeast coast provide habitat for more than 4,000 puffins each summer.
